ABS dash light

My ABS dash light started appearing intermittently with occasional "skidding" of rear wheels. Over a couple of days the car stopped shifting and stayed stuck in 3rd or 4th. Took it to my shop and he told me that the ABS wheel speed sensors needed to be replaced. He said all four had to be replaced according to a TSB.

Is it necessary to replace all FOUR?! I couldn't find the TSB. I've had very good luck with this shop and they've never steered me wrong. Will this fix the problem? He assured me (95% certainty) that this would solve the problem.

Thanks in advance.

I love my ML but man it really has managed to test my commitment. MB's implementation of the computerization of the automobile falls woefully short of that accomplished by Lexus. My car stopped shifting and became essentially useless when the ABS speed sensors went out. How stupid is that? I have no problem with cutting out the ABS functionality, but the design and computer function should allow for the continued use of all non-affected systems.

I love this car as well... And also I just got it today from service because of replacement of speed sensor as well and the abs light was on for few days...

In order to keep this car, you need to accept the fact that all modern cars have many sensors, but this one specifically has tons of it. Any electronic component is subject to damage at any time like a light bulb, being MB or Boeing has nothing to do with this fact... Get used of it

This doesn't mean that it can become persistent issue. If it does annoy you, sell it and buy newer ML

Were all four ABS sensors replaced or just the one? I was told that there is a TBS requiring that all four be replaced.

I've done it on and X164, replaced one only, although the recommendation is to replace both on the same axle, not all 4. The second may fail in a few hundred or thousand miles. I have a second one on hand, but wanted to see how long it would take for the second sensor on that axle to go. YMMV
