I'm at 47k miles on my 2013 ML350, and the adblue heater blew. Do I have any stance on not paying the cost of the replacement of the heater (1.9k)? I can't say how much I hate this car, but you live and you learn. I am picking it up this afternoon so quick replies would be appreciated

I replaced the entire tank (which includes the heater) myself for $1,100 and 45 minutes of my time.

Guys, I had the similar heating (2013 E350 - warranty expired on Jan 24, 2017) element issue with adblue tank. Initially dealer quoted $2300 to fix the same. I have told them that this need to be covered as per EPA guidelines emission systems should be covered for 8 years or 80000 miles. He made me wait for 2 days, he called me today and said he will do the job for $650. I jumped and said yes. I don't know whether it is a right thing or not.

2013 ML350 Bluetech. 54,000 miles, check engine light on, Ad-Blue heating element is bad, cost is $1875 from the Winston-Salem, NC dealer. Despite several calls to corporate, MB is offering zero help so far. They are also claiming it’s not part of the emissions warranty.
I had planned to upgrade to a 2017 GLE but if they do not take care of us on this then no more Mercedes purchases for me.
Any recommendations from anyone that was reimbursed?

Without the heater, the AdBlu would freeze in cold weather -11Celsius. The lack of the reductant injected into the SCR would cause the nitrogen oxides to pass unchanged creating NO and NO2. Adblu is 30%urea which donates an additional Nitrogen to create N2 and H2O.
6NO + 4NH3 → 5N2 + 6H2O 4NO + 4NH3 + O2 → 4N2 + 6H2O
6NO2 + 8NH3 → 7N2 + 12H2O
2NO2 + 4NH3 + O2 → 3N2 + 6H2O
NO + NO2 + 2NH3 → 2N2 + 3H2O

What was the shop in Toronto that could fix your Adblue issue for $1000? I have the same issue and i am also in the Toronto area.

It is covered 100% by the dealer. Just picked up my 2011 ML last night and save 2500$, only cost me 150$ for the diagnostic.
It is cover in Canada under the Part emission warranty that is 8 years, 130k KM.

Unfortunately I am at 132,000 km's ........ but the dealer I went to (Maple Mercedes) said that the tank/pump/heater is NOT covered by the warranty. I then phoned Mercedes Canada and they said the same thing.
What dealer fixed yours under warranty?

Before I even knew what was the probleme, the dealer told me he sent the request the mercedes Canada, then called me 2 days later saying the car is ready and was cover 100%.
Maybe you can try pressing Mercedes Canada saying you passed 130k km because you were told it wasent.
I can scan you my invoice if you want once i get home to show them

However ......... after explaining my position to a service advisor at Mercedes Maple and Mercedes Canada, I got a phone call from the service advisor at Maple Mercedes on the way home from work. He told me that after making some calls that he should be able to help me out a little. I have made an appointment for next week .......... hoping for some good news.

Ralph69, sounds like you bought/serviced your Benz at the dealership thus they used their Customer Loyalty program to help you out. That's what i was told by both the dealership in Maple and Mercedes Canada ...... the Adblue system is not covered by their warranty .... only certain parts are covered by the 8 year/130000 km warranty.

And just so you know, I have my ML for 3 years and was my first MB. I didn’t buy it from the dealer and it was my third trip to the dealer.
first time 2 years ago, for the B maintenance, second time to by some ADBlue that I filled myself and a few days ago for the heater.
I really doubt I'm consider a loyal customer. but it's good to know that I have a dealer with such good service
I really think that if you push and squeeze them enough they will cut you a good deal.
Good luck

I don't understand why someone has not pulled one of these apart to see what has failed. There are heater element repair kits for AdBlue reservoirs for other cars, but why are they priced at over $1000? Seems to me that if these are failing left and right and Mercedes doesn't want to cover them, this issue is ripe for a class action lawsuit to force them to do so.

Well if they can cut you a deal, that’s good news, specially since officially your pass the 130k km warranty.

Well, after being told by both the service advisor at Maple Mercedes and someone from Mercedes Canada that the Adblue heater was not covered by warranty, later the same day I got a call back from the service advisor at Maple Mercedes (Paul). He told me that he might be able to help me out with the cost of the repair ($1500 - $2000). I had told him that I had just bought the truck 5 months ago and just had it serviced last month at Maple Mercedes. The previous owner also had all the services done at Maple Mercedes and I believe that had a lot to do with Mercedes helping me out. I just got a call saying my truck is ready and Mercedes covered all but the diagnostics.
Ralph69 ......... thanks for sharing your related experience. If it were not for your posts I would not have even tried to persuade Mercedes to help me out.
That's what this forum is all about. Gotta love it! I hope to be able to pay this forward.

Those who used Vladimir's emulator- still happy?
My 2011 E350's adblue tank heater failed at 33000 miles. Now at 66,000 it appears to have failed again along with false errors such as the 16 Starts remaining message popping up then disappearing as well as the Add Adblue message coming and going. Currently I have a CEL that came and went but has returned and not gone off. Of course, the adblue system is not covered under the 8/80emissions warranty so, I am facing the decision of repairing the tank heater and associated parts - not using MB/Bosch parts but an upgraded heater supposedly made more durably from a vendor in Canada, or punting the whole thing and going the emulator route, or, punting completely by selling the car.
I really love this car, but am NOT happy to have a defective system that appears to guarantee a $2000 repair every 30,000 miles or so. Other than this and the oil cooler leak that was repaired under the warranty, it has been a troublefree and pleasant car to own and drive.
Those who have gone the emulator route seemed quite pleased with the result at first. Are you still happy? Any gotchas to know about?
As as far as long term ownership- who has owned this model and accumulated high mileage? Is it a thing to aspire to do, or is it a better idea to get out before the repairs pile up?

Mercedes replaced with an Infinity?
I also just joined this elite crew. My check engine light came on after a recent oil change so I immediately took it into the nearest dealership. They charged me $140 for the privilege of hooking my car up to their diagnostic machine and telling me I had an intank heater failure and the fix was $2025 as they had to remove and replace the entire adblue tank to get to the faulty heater. I just purchased the car back in July and, as you would expect, passed $50,000 miles last month. I called MBUSA and they were polite but useless- having a case manager contact me at 7:30 in the evening the same day I called to offer me weak condolences and an offer to contact my dealership in an attempt to negotiate a 10% discount on the service. When I told her that I thought that resolution was inadequate she told me I should have purchased the extended warranty. We then ended our brief and tumultuous engagement. I've resigned myself to the fact that I have to come out of pocket to pay for what appears to be a faulty component but I feel compelled to find out if they plan to continue to use this heating element and to warn unsuspecting purchasers. I read through the warranty information and this component is conspicuously absent from the coverage information for emissions. Has anyone tried writing to the EPA- Director of Field Operations & Support in DC to get this issue documented? Regardless, I'm thoroughly disappointed in my purchase and, in hindsight, wish I would have just upgraded my Infinity

adblue heater failure:
My mother-in-law has a 2009 ML320 Bluetec with 100,000+ miles. Dealer said Bluetec heater failing needs to be replaced. $2,700.00. Question 1: Tech is saying if not repaired, the error code will eventually prevent the car from starting? Anyone heard of this?
Question 2: Is the urea / Bluetec system required for the operation of the car?

Q2: The only why you need an AdBlue is to reduce NOx emission, car can work with no adblue for years, but most probably=definately you will not pass the emission test
two solutions: to repair heater or to order bypass at ebay.

The dealer wanted $1,800 to replace the heater failure. Seems yours is priced $1k extra (dunno where you live may be a factor).
1. Yes
2. No
