yup. that happened to my 2011 ml350 when i replaced the engine air filters and did not place the engine cover on correctly. Not enough air was getting to the manifold.

RPM acting weird after Air filter and Oil Change

So I decided to change my engine oil(Mobil 1 0W-30)/filter and air filter on my own for the first time.

I definitely did something to it.

I took the car out to drive around the block and realized the oil change has affected the rpm. The needle is a bit more erratic-going up and down slightly every time i press the brake to come to a stop or when i accelerate. That was not the case before i changed oil.

The "check engine" light is also on.

After reading the threads, I realized I had installed the air filter case to its mount incorrectly. (the back clip wasn't catching it correctly. I realigned the air filter case and is now correctly mounted.)

But the rpm needle is still going up and down and the "check engine" light is still on.

Is is the oil that I'm using possibly?

Also to note: while i was changing the oil filter, i had inadvertently spilled several drops of oil on the belt right below it. Could this be a possible cause?

Your response is greatly appreciated.

Hi AsianGuy.

How did you know the case wasn't installed correctly? And How were you able to resolve it?
Did you also get the "check engine" light and the rpms going up and down?

Thank you.

take air filter housing back off

If you reverse what you have done, see if problem stops. Maybe your filter is wrong size and poor fit causing obstruction or not allowing case to fit right. Shake out the old filter and reinstall making sure everything fits tight and snug. Make sure no tree leaves from bottom of box are blocking anything.

Thanks for the quick reply!

That is a great! Unfortunately for me, I threw them away and the trash guys already did their round.

the 0W-30 oil isn't causing this right? because it's an approved oil. so most likely, you are right. I will stop by a parts store and pick up a new filter and see if that works. Hope you are right! Thank you very much

oil is not issue

Then run it without air filters for a trip to test drive. If OK then don't get those filters again. OE manufacturer for those is probably Hengst or Mann brand. I have seen the aftermarket ones be too small and let dirty air in all around the perimeter.the good kind have more pleats of paper. Try amazon and look for those name brands or even advanced or Autozone maybe.no third party 3rd world air filters. the owner of the car told me look how clean they are after 40,000 miles ... Yikes.

Since this was the first time i changed my air filter.. my car was still under warranty so i took it up to the dealer and then they just reset my check engine light. They wanted to charge me 169 dollars but i told them to get lost and then they just gave me my car back. I use to take 2 cars to them but decided to do the work myself and save a little bit of money. Im sure that you can search around and find out how to reset the check engine light. Im 100% positive thats what is was.
