ML500 Airmatic Compressor Stalls Engine

Just had the ML500 compressor issue where the compressor runs on after the car is switched off. Went straight to the local MB specialist (5 minute drive) where they promptly changed the relay.
The problem now is that soon as the airmatic compressor kicks in the engine stalls. If I restart I can only get a few hundred metres before it stalls again.
Even when stationary the engine stalls as soon as I use the raise vehicle function and the compressor kicks in.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I am assuming I am up for a new compressor and hopefully nothing more sinister but am extremely surprised that a compressor fault can result in an engine stall. Vehicle is a 2006 ML500.

My MB specialist service centre has diagnosed the cause of this problem.
The relay which was sticking on blew out a track of the circuit board under the fuse box. This resulted in a circuit error which caused the ECU to shut down the engine every time the airmatic compressor kicked in. It appears that the compressor has survived.

Breathe a sigh of relief. The compressor ain't cheap.
