Trunk lid latch won't lock when closed
I have a 2008 ML550. Recently the 'trunk lid open' warning light came on while I was driving. I opened and closed the trunk lid, but the latch does not close to secure the door in the close position.
The liftgate works fine. It is just the trunk lid that does not latch when the trunk lid is down. There is nothing in the owners manual about this issue. Does anyone know what causes this, and how to fix it?
Thanks.

There are easily 30-40 threads on this forum on that subject. I suggest you use the "Search this forum" feature and search for "rear latch". In the rare case that you don't find what you need, you should post another message saying so and why your locking issue does not fit any of the covered causes in those other threads, so someone can research it.

I did search the forum to see if there were any past postings about this issue. What I found were issues with multiple doors having a locking or unlocking issue but not specifically the trunk lid. My issue is that the latch does not secure the trunk lid in the close position. All other functions related to the trunk lid works just fine.
The trunk lid (door) close manually, it is the latch that is supposed to secure the door in the close position that is not working.

my 2008 E320 CDI just had the same problem …. the lid would not shut and stay closed …. used the house key to toggle the latch on the trunk all the way back until I heard a click of it locking … then used the lever inside the driver door to release the lock … then closed the trunk … it closed and stayed closed … seems like the locking lever may have got some gunk build up … some WD40 spray on it should cause the sticking to go away ...

NO, don't do that. WD-40 will not clean up any gunk, it will dry and leave a film that attracts dust and creates more gunk. WD stands for water displacement and is for protecting things against moisture and corrosion, NOT for lubrication or cleaning.

Trunk Lid latch
Just replaced my Trunk latch after same problem on ML350. Common problem I am told. OEM cost over $1200 with after market about $900. Got sick of crawling into rear and manually unlocking the tail gate.
