Alternator Change Bad Outcome BIG PICS
Hello Everyone,
I recently had my alternator changed on my 2007 ML320 CDI, to do this you must remove the left air filter assy. I took the car to a garage where we have our fleet of gas trucks repaired regularly. When I asked if they knew how to work on the Mercedes, they replied that they have often worked on these cars and never had any trouble. So the changed the alternator and I picked up the car the next morning. Later that afternoon when I started the truck, the glow-plug light remained on, then when I got home the check engine lit up. Got the code P0600 and various others concerning the cylinders. I opened the hood to see if anything was out of place, and noticed a lot of oil near and around the turbo inlet. I removed the air intake tube and found what you see on the pictures. This was not like this when I changed the air filter in the beginning of the spring. I am missing a quarter of the rubber, could this have damaged some parts internally like the glow plugs? Or the cylinders? All these codes and lights happened after the install, also the fins on my turbo are badly damaged, could the rubber have caused this? Where is the Rubber? I need some feed back please.

Yes the rubber seal damaged the turbo. Why haven't you returned to the mechanic? The more time you waste, he will probably say you did it.

Hello Dundee
First thank you for responding. I did call the shop to inform them of the trouble lights and asked if they had a scanner for the MB they replied no. So I purchased the icarsoft scanner and verified all the codes. I saw the problem last night and they are closed for the week-end. Monday morning for sure I am calling the service manager. Would the remaining rubber go into the engine block?

Been a while since I've seen a turbo wheel that mauled. And if that's the intake you can be sure the parts went somewhere inside the engine, which is likely going to add up to a lot of money to repair. Moral of the story is that it doesn't pay to take a car to a shop that doesn't advertise it works on MB cars but claims they have worked on them. That to me is always a red flag.

Nothing probably made it past the intercooler into the engine, but that turbo is destroyed. That sucks. They pinched the seal putting the intake tube back in. Supposed to replace that seal every time anyway to help prevent that.
