Weird electrical problemswith my 2007 ML350

Hi all,

I had my car in the shop for a CEL and some other things. Got the car back and CEL came back with a P0018. Oh, well. Ordered a sensor. I then started getting messages for trailer lights and brakes not working along with the rapid blinker. Signals are working fine, I am not towing a trailer. Then things got interesting. Stopped for a pint and came back to the car, started it up and the gas gauge read 0, wipers would not work along with the turn signals. Also, the lift gate will not open at all. No more trailer messages. Car runs perfect, otherwise. Any ideas on where to start? SAM? 108,000 miles on the car.

What was the original code?

And what were " and some other things"?

What did the shop replace/fix?

What do you mean by the brakes aren't working?

First you said the signals were working and then you said they weren't. Explain.

Hi Maj.
The original codes were P0022 and P0025. My mechanic replaced a cam position sensor along with the AC compressor and a rear wheel speed sensor. The check engine light came back on with a P0018 after I left. The brakes are working fine but I started getting messages on the dash saying trailer light and brake lights inoperable. Not towing a trailer. I parked the car for an hour and when I returned, that's when my turn signals and wipers wouldn't work along with the lift gate that will not open. I am no longer getting the messages about trailer lights. I started doing some digging after I posted and reading about the rear SAM. It did rain pretty hard yesterday. I just went out this morning and turn signals, wipers and lift gate are all still in-op. I also have an SRS light that has been on for a few months that has been traced to the passenger seat sensor. Car runs good and gets good mileage. I appreciate any help!

Remove everything in the spare tire area including the gray mat and you will find rain water collected on the floor. Pull the rubber drain plugs and look for corrosion inside the SAM.

You must get tail lamp seals immediately.

Took everything out down to the metal and no sign of water anywhere. Going to pull the SAM and see what it looks like, though. I disconnected the battery for an hour, reconnected and all is working again. I will replace the tail light seals. Thanks for the reply!

SAM was corroded in several areas. Put it back in and everything works except the gas gauge, which now reads full, while before it read empty. Time for a new one.

If you take the SAM apart and remove the black towers, you can clean the corrosion with a toothbrush and Elec. Contact Cleaner.

Thanks, I will try that. There isn't much corrosion but in a couple spots it was burned.
