2006 ML320 CDI lurching
The car has occasionally been a bit prone to lurching about 2 seconds after pushing the throttle hard (changing into 2nd?) but it has not been constant enough to be anything but annoying - normally it happened on a brisk acceleration from lights or when backing out of a driveway then accelerating forward along the road. Car goes forward as normal then possibly lurches a bit then there is a big hesitation then car goes as normal. No power during hesitation etc for say 1-3 seconds
The problem has got recently BAD and putting into limp mode. Which thankfully resets after restart
I get two codes only
0894 The gear is implausible or the transmission is slipping (from transmission itself)
2232-1 Transmission Control ETC FAULT 15 (which comes up from scanning engine - not transmission)
I have done live data and about one in 5 brisk starts now it does the lurch (like it is starving for fuel) I have now changed the fuel filter (was 50,000km old) and done glowplugs (5 and 6 were open circuit) and air filters. But no real change
The live data normally has it occur when changing 1st to 2nd, but every now and then 3rd to 4th
If you maintain the throttle the car starts going fwd, then nearly stands on its nose, then if throttle maintained the car behaves as normal, going up through the gears etc.
I am not sure if the transmission codes are from the sharp fluctuations from a miss in the engine causing the transmission to slip, or if it is the transmission itself
I have not yet taken pan off transmission to see if there is much metal in it
Any help appreciated

This might be the time that you will have to drop the pan but understand that after draining the fluid, there is no fill tube. The fluid must be injected through the oil pan using a pump.

Thanks for that , I will hopefully do it over the weekend - did it before on this car (60000km ago)
I made up a hose adapter that screws into pan and fits onto drum pump end - it is a bit rough but works ok

Dropped the pan and it was full of steel - looks like a bearing race - some bits 6mmx3mmx.5mm - oddly there was a wire ring - about 15mm diameter of like .8mm wire (broken in half)
One of the valves was jambed by this debris thus the cause of the symptoms
I have installed a later transmission and 3 disk torque converter form a late 2009 ML350 CDI and used the original 2006 VGS2 TCU, valve body etc.
All went well on 10km test run,
