Miles left in tank

My electronic display increases and decreases quite rapid. It counts a mile every few hundred yards. Any ideas

I think its normal. Had an ML350 and currently driving an ML500. Miles left in tank go down rapidly. Its highly unreliable. I just ignore it and go by the fuel gauge

Reading for Range and the Star Diagnostic System

With regards to the indicated reading for Range (km or miles) in the display that constantly increases and decreases as you're driving, I imagine the Range is constantly being re-calculated based on a floating average fuel consumption and the estimated amount of fuel remaining in the tank. As the floating average fuel consumption will always be fluctuating somewhat as you drive, so will the corresponding reading for Range. I've always thought I'd rather have that estimated remaining amount of fuel (in litres or gallons) indicated in that spot in the display even if such a reading is not exact, but at least consistent. To judge the amount of remaining fuel going by the fuel gauge is much more inexact. I'm wondering if the reading for Range (km or miles) in the display can be replaced with a reading for Remaining Fuel (litres or gallons) with a Star Diagnostic System or a similar high level OBD2 tool.

On mine I just press the ok button on the steering wheel and it displays miles left
