ML320 CDI Transmission Pan Gasket Leak
About 2 years ago, I had the transmission serviced on our ML320 because we plan on keeping it for the duration. Now, the pan gasket it leaking and will need to be replaced. I probably should have left the transmission alone to begin with; I suspect the dealer pinched the gasket when they installed it, or otherwise messed it up somehow, and its only now presenting itself because of the skidplates, and other undercarriage pieces. Now, a different dealer wants hundreds of dollars to fix it.
The work should be pretty easy but getting the trans fluid back in is the real problem. Is there any way to fill the ML transmission without taking it to the dealer? I really don't want to pay these guys to screw up my vehicle... (again)
Here is what you should do. Do not remove the pan.
1. order 6 bolts from the dealer. These bolts are one time use only and they probably didn't replace them. Read step #4 in PDF.
2. after you get the bolts, remove one bolt at a time and replace with new, finger tight.
3. Then torque the bolts to 4Nm or 3 ft. lbs. See bottom of PDF.
4. Then tighten the bolts again using a Torque Angle Gauge an additional 180 degrees. See video.
