Black smoke

Hello,

My friend has 2009 ML350 Bluetec and he noticed black smoke is coming from pipe (see attached picture). Do you have an idea what it could be a problem?

Can you provide a close up picture of this pipe?

Black smoke is rich exhaust. Exhaust should stay in the exhaust. Since it is coming out of the exhaust, there must be a leak somewhere. Has work been done on this vehicle recently?

If its a flexible rubber pipe its oil bleeder pipe,
Oil bleeder filters oil from blow-by gases.
Do the blow-by test see how bad it is, maybe bleeder must be replaced.

It is amazing how many problems he got with car. He paid for fixes than the car worth and I don't understand why he is doing it (2009 ML 350 with 220K km).

I am going relay your respond and ask him to check a few things ...

Yeah, could be the black death (Leaky injector seal)
Could be the the oil vapor separator / hose assembly (likely)
Could be something else as the exhaust pressure sensors are there too.

Remove the air filter and inspect. Have him turn on the car, where to you feel air?
