320CDI glow plugs - need for a thin socket?

Replaced glow plugs to my woman's ML.

Got five out out of six plugs out (three dead at 214,000 km/ 133,000 miles). The plug closest to the passenger was in a tight pit, and I considered my deep socket not to fit in there.

Is there really a need for a thin-walled socket?

I don't know what you mean by "it doesn't fit", but you need a swivel type socket

Indeed, it was a mirage of my own. Now replaced.

Mika what were the symptoms that led you to replace the plugs?

Actually, there were no symptoms so far. The car is equipped with an aftermarket electric heating device which warms up the coolant prior to starting the engine up. This heater is always used when ambient temps go freezing.

I have had few cars with a diesel engine, and noticed that the glow plugs start to fail at around 100,000 miles. That's why I wanted to replace the plugs and -as said- three were gone at 133,000 miles.

Mika thanks very much for your speedy reply. The after market electric device sounds good, is it different than the bock heater
that I have in my ML320. Could you send me information on the device that you have.

Well, we are basically talking about the same thing. To be precise, it is not a block heater but attached within the coolant circulation hose.
