Topping up engine oil?

Since picking my ML63 up in late June I havent put too many miles on it so far. I had the 80k service performed at the dealer which had the oil change. I've read that apparently the ML63 can need 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles, which seems crazy to me. I have only put about 1000 miles on the car since then. I've never had to really add oil in the cars that I've owned. Apologies in advance if this is obvious, but do I need to use the exact same oil such as the Mercedes 5w40 quart? Or can I use a quart of something in the same weight from the store? I realize that each oil between brands may have different formulations, and its probably not good to mix them with whats currently in there. I'm assuming that Mercedes is rebranded oil from a big manufacture like mobil1 or shell. What do you guys recommend, just buying some of the Mercedes quarts or something cheaper? I don't mind paying for the Mercedes quarts between changes I just don't want to have any problems.
