2008 ML550 - FRONT SPOILER/BUMPER COVER OPENING

Anyone know what this square hole on the bottom of the front spoiler/bumper cover is for?

Is there a part that should be covering this square hole?

Any help is as always greatly appreciated, THANK YOU in advance.

I am referring to the big square hole on the bottom of the bumper cover, NOT the tow hook cover. Hence, TWO pictures, ................... the second one does not show a tow hook cover.

As you can see, the tow hook has a cover on it, ......................... why would I ask if there is a part that should be covering this square hole?

I saw that after I posted and then could not find how to delete my post.
Have no idea what that larger opening could be for.

Thanks anyway. Hopefully someone will chime in.

For some reason, this W164 portion of the forum is REALLY slow. The W211 E-Class Forum was/is super responsive.

This place is a joke.
No idea on the cutout. Could it be the place for an optional block heater plug? This forum is slow because not much goes wrong with the 164 chassis.

I checked other ML550 pictures on line, they all have this cut out. Well, at least I know there is nothing missing there.

I like your reasoning for this part of the forum being slow. At least you respond to some issues, ...................... you may have to get on more often.

I'm excited to report that I have solved this mystery. The answer has been in front of me all along! Your 550 shares the same front bumper as the 07-08 Ml63. I just noticed today on my facelift '11 ML63 I also have a similar cutout. It's purpose is to allow access to the oil cooler drain plug, which is supposed to be drained during an oil change.

Well thank you very much Brad, at least we know now that it is there for a reason and that it does not need to be covered.

As always, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your insight, it is greatly appreciated.
