Inside Fender Well

Can anyone explain to me WHY Mercedes decided to use this awful felt material on the inside of the Rear Fender wells instead of plastic materials?

What a mess and very difficult to clean, with all the road debris in there from the latest storm.

Any hints as to how to clean it? I am hosing most off and am using a brush to loosen the items from the felt.

Not liking it!!!!!

Obviously the answer is noise absorption.

Use a stiff brush.
