Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement

I had a code of implausible speed at left rear speed sensor. This popped up a year ago and left me stranded 200km from home in 37 degrees celcius heat. It put the trans into limp home mode as we sat by the highway on a public holiday and with no tow driver prepared to come and get us. Not carrying my scan tool at the time (never, ever again) I paid $250 in roadside assistance fees to have the fella spot the code with a $40 scan tool and clear it and we got home after 3 hours of waiting.

The fault never reappeared until the last week. I'd already bought new sensors so decided to change them over. When I pulled the faulty one out came a heap of rusty crud all over the sensor. I contemplated just cleaning it but since I had the part, just changed it over after squirting a heap of parts cleaner onto the redactor ring.

If you're stuck in this without a part, its probably worth cleaning what you've got and giving that a try. Its not a permanent fix. Logic is that if the sensor is faulty, it will keep reappearing. If it doesn't, and I'd suggest not much can go wrong with the sensor itself, the issue if probably the redactor ring and dirt. Certainly having a go at cleaning the ring and the sensor isnt going to hurt, to get you out of trouble. Biggest lesson - don't leave home without your scan tool. Some photos attached. Original Part No. was 164 540 15 17. Replaced with Meyle 164 540 07 17 which was described as perfect fit.

Dirty speed sensor

Great info as always. Good call on bringing the scan tool with you! I never really thought of that since all my other cars are new but on my ‘09 ML, that makes a ton of sense. 👍
