Only in promo picture land can you have a perfectly clean car in the middle of the desert with sand flying everywhere.

BTW, take a close look at this picture:

Note reflection in water of daytime running lights are not the LED strips but rather four round fogs. Got to love the inconsistencies of promo materials.

Good observation. That proves that most of these are faked and made-up photos. Another reason is that no one would take a beautiful Mercedes off road. That is insane. A jeep maybe but not a Mercedes. They are just making up these photos to show an element of "ruggedness", but I'm sure that does not happen very often in the real world, even if they are built to take it. Has anyone here done any serious off roading with one of these vehicles? If I ever buy one I can guarantee the wheels will never be off a concrete pavement.

Sharp eyes! My guess is the photo was taken with a preproduction vehicle that did not have the LEDs and they were Pshopped in later.

I've taken fire roads many times, once culminating in a hair, steep, rocky descent.

I have taken my 2012 ML350 off-road - not mudding and it does great.

I don't have pictures because who else would be driving the damn thing.

Cool

When in "D" it seems like the vehicle has very LITTLE torque until I get to 2K+ Diesel RPM, can anyone comment on this?

If in drive does it start me out in "2"

Should I keep it in "1" when climbing curbs?

Hmmm...not sure about 1st gear...you will really have to be really easy on the gas. The gas version accelerates very quickly and caused my wheels to slip on wet grass and mud.

You want the wheels to turn as slow as possible, if you go fast you will just dig in the dirt or mud. I got scared a couple of times thinking "who the f&*% is going to come and get me?"
