Burnt Rubber Smell 2012 Bluetec

I just returned from a 2 hour drive and I immediately noticed a burning rubber/plastic smell once I entered the garage. The windows were up and I could still smell it. Not sure what this was as it hasn’t ever happened before. I only have 1500km on the truck, so I'm kind of worried.

Also, when the vehicle was turned off I noticed that there were ticking sounds happening every few seconds. Has anyone else had this happen on a new truck?

Thanks in advance, Cheers.

I'm not familiar with diesels, but from all the new cars I've experienced, that burning smell is normal and will go away with more miles. The car is still new and breaking in.

If the smell persists, I would have it looked at, just to be on the safe side.

True, burning odors during the first 100 km are not that unusual--from melting assembly lubricant dripping on hot exhaust, for one example.

But a "burning rubber/plastic smell" suddenly appearing after 1500 trouble-free kilometers is something else again.

You guys are all too kind.....

I think if I were Stainless Steel at about say 800 degrees F i would make a few noises as I cooled down too.

Sorry

Look underneath to see if a plastic bag has melted itself onto your exhaust system.

Ticking is normal; happens with most cars as the exhaust heat shield cools at a different rate vs the metal it is attached to.

Not that it's likely to be relevant but check your oil level. My 2008 went through quite a bit of oil in the first 5,000 kms and the first time I checked it I was down more than a full liter.

It's most probably your DPF filter

I drive a new cummins with the EGR, & Particulate filter DPF. When the filter is regenerating there is a ticking noise, and sometimes it smells like burnt rubber. It is normal. It will get better with age as I'm sure it's also other things burning off the new car. Either way, I would still check your oil level just to be safe.

By the way, I get my 350 BT this Saturday. I can't wait.

All DIESEL. ALL THE TIME!!!

That is a good point. The regeneration process employs a periodic afterburner effect to turn the accumulated soot to ash. Lots of extra heat going through the exhaust system.

Thanks for the replies, it was fine the next day & today. This is my first diesel so I should have done a search on regeneration... I just did and this is completely normal.

Congrats on your 350 BT purchase.

Glad to help.

Forums are a great help. I always look around whenever I'm making a major purchase to the forums for general advice etc.

As an aside, I've been driving diesel trucks now for work for almost 20 years. I'm a huge diesel fan. I'm totally stoked to have one for pleasure too, and a Benz to boot... I can't wait. I'm like a 43 year old kid in a very expensive candy store...

Cheers.

2012 ml350 Bluetec with Pano Premium Pkg, Sport Pkg, Driving Assist Pkg, factory hitch & Running boards. All in Tenorite Grey.
