Actually, turned out my dealer was wrong. It's a US$4,600 upgrade total...it is not stacked on top of the $1620 leather upgrade.
BTW: I also didn't like the Brown Satin Ash when I first saw it in person. It was on a ML that didn't have wrapped dash and it seems like 'dull upon dull'...dull wood with dull plastic dash. I didn't like the open-pore aspect, and I wanted to buff and shine it to match the smooth (non-open pore) Brown Satin Ash wood wheel.
But once I saw it in a ML63 with a leather wrapped dash with its light-colored stitching, it made all the difference. The Brown Satin Ash has such an 'organic' and natural feel to it, that I realized it needs to be surrounded with other organic-looking material, like leather or MBtex, to make it look good...and then it looks more than good, it I think it looks amazing.
Burl Walnut had been my favorite, but the heavy, shinny plastic clear-coat they put on it seems to detract and disconnect me from the rich look of the wood. If it had less of this heavy coat, I think it would look a lot better. However, the shininess does spruce up a dull non-wrapped dash, so if I were not getting the wrapped dash, I might still opt for the Burl Wood.
Here's some of my favorite shots of the Brown Satin Ash with a wrapped dash.
Those last few were contributed by GregW (thanks, Greg!)

2013 ML550: Paladium Silver, Brown Satin Ash
pictures really don't capture it. In real life, its open pores and texture make it look and feel anything but imitation.

any one here have any links to people with the new G550 or G63 with quilted seats? Like the ML guides, there is lots of marketing photography showing quilted seating as an option for 2012 and I love it in the G class.

Just ordered my ML350 and am weighing up the option of Designo. Is it only the diamond pattern thats available for the Australian market? Or is the AMG designo styling also available? Real mystery to me....and any help would be great. Not sure if any have landed in Oz and whether anybody can upload a photo.

I have selected the black single-tone designo leather with the diamond pattern option on mine together with the standard brown burr walnut wood trim. It's only available as an option on the 350s, 500 & 63. The 63 has it's own designo pattern design which is standard and exclusive only to that model but you can order the diamond pattern on one as well I think. Have a look here, most of the info you need should be there
however, that is dated back in March '12 so it may not be current although it's still what's showing on Benz's Aus website.
Unless there's been a price rise since I ordered mine back in June here are the prices of the 3 designo options here:
designo black piano lacquer trim parts $2700
designo wood/leather steering wheel $2300
designo leather single-tone $3500
Note the first two items must be ordered together so I'm not sure why they have seperate prices, and all prices above are including gst & lct but not stamp duty.
Mine is due to be built this Wednesday, from an order date of June 19. I was meant to have it before Christmas, they're now saying delivery date is 31 Dec at this stage. They originally said delivery mid November/early December so it's already been delayed once. Hopefully no more delays, fingers crossed!
Has your dealer given you a build date and/or a delivery date yet?
Cheers

Ordered a ML550 Black/White designo car like 3 1/2 months ago and was told its delayed and it wont be here until December... What is going on with the ML production? Honestly thinking of just picking up a Porsche GTS SUV.
