I found this info on the "AMG Private Lounge" Website:

This is only the executive summary. The site offers more technical details about the system to its members. I do not think they will be appreciate me posting all the details because it is a restricted site to the AMG owners. The AMG owners can register after providing the serial number of their cars.

2004 Volvo XC70; 2012 GLK 350 4matic
M-B finally got around to copying my 2004 XC70 (built 04/2003) layout. 'Bout time. Actually, the Volvo XC70 transverse engine/front drive/AWD system debuted in 2001 or 2002.

The transverse engine layout is inherently more efficient due to the rotation of the engine / transmission and drive wheels. Since they are all rotating in the same direction you save a little energy. Plus you would not have the torque of the rear drivshaft pushing one wheel down and lifting the other up. Unless you used a torque tube like the Corvette and the old Chevette. Yes the Chevette had a torque tube.
