Running board lights: worth it?

Unless you need them for your kids/grand kids - or do a lot of camping - they are ugly.
Much better value for front passengers is option 876 with front door sills and added ambient/multi-color lighting..

It was an option that I thought was pretty expensive, but it was on the ML I ended up buying. I have to say... They look good... Especially at night. At least that is what I think. Don't know if it is $600-700 good (I am a major cheapskate) but I like it and glad I have them. Of course I have a 4 year old that climbs in and out of it, and they are nice for that.

What color are the led lights white or blue-ish white? Do they come on automatically every time you unlock the doors and they are timed to shut off or do they just stay on? If so do you leave them off or on most of the time (at night)?

My wife says they are white (I am colorblind). They only turn on when the doors open up or you unlock them.... They turn off when driving. I can't figure out how to upload a picture on my iPhone, so email me at mra01@hotmail.com and I can email you a picture I took this morning and you can decide for yourself.

I found another use for them today... Went skiing today and they were great lighting up the running boards when I had to stand on them to close the ski rack. I am 6' and still can't reach up high enough to close them. Oh... They do turn on when you unlock the door.

I have a diamond white ML so the running board lights matches well with it. Everywhere I go, I always get nice comments on those lights if they come up to me. I love lights on cars so I also got the ambient lighting and under the front doors. If I had to just pick one thou, I would get the ambient lighting/front doors.
Yea, these running door lights turns on along with the side mirror under lights when you lock and unlock the doors for a set time then turn off. Plus, they're on when the doors are open. I want to customize it where I can turn it on/off while driving, but that might be illegal.
I have a pic of it but it's not too clear plus there's too much light out. I can try to get a better pic when I'm somewhere dark.

I think it is funny that those of us who have them are talking about them for the utility aspect, myself included. Yes, it helps to convince ourselves of of the money being well spent, but we can also like the aesthetics of it. It was after I bought mine, I realized that they can actually serve a purpose. Don't think you need children or to better see the running boards while accessing a ski rack to have them. If you like the looks of them, go for it!

To me it makes me think of stretch hummers and fat girls in bridesmaids outfits tumbling out, drunk .. maybe I'd have to see them in person.

I saw an ML last night with this and 2 of the LEDs are dead and I am sure it was a 2013 model as I noticed the backup camera still sticking out on the tail gate. It does looks okay but when one of the LEDs goes out it looks stupid. makes me wonder how much it will cost to replace only one LED or you need to buy the entire kit to just replace one.

Realize this thread is 3+ years old, but does anyone know/remember the actual part number for the illuminated running boards? I can't for the life of me find them anywhere on the epc. Thanks!
