Adaptive Highbeam Assist Problem

I activated the Adaptive Highbeam Assist in my new ML350 (MY2013) as described in the manual and everything looks OK. I can even see the symbol on the display indicating that it is activated. However, I have never seen any change in my headlight position between main beam and dipped-beam no matter how much the road is dark and whether another car in the front. It activated the high beam only once when I was driving uphill and the camera has seen the sky. Anybody knows what could be the problem?

thanks

It only works above around 35 MPH and if the camera detects headlights, tail lights or street lights it won't work. You almost have to be totally in the dark (no pun intended) for it to work, at least in my '13 ML350.

thanks frtdog! If it can distinguish the street lights it is more or less useless. This is what to says in the owner's manual:

"The system automatically adapts the dipped-beam headlamp range depending on the distance to the other vehicle. Once the system no longer detects any other vehicles, it reactivates the main-beam headlamps."

So, I understand correctly, the range of dipped beam must be varying according to the distance with the car in the front. But it does not even do that. Annoying...

This is the most unreliable part of the vehicle. It has mechanical flaps to deflect light upwards to give high beam. One of mine jammed so it would not go up. Maybe both of yours have jammed. The dealer could fix that.

What the dealer cannot fix is the auto dipping for white posts, road signs etc. And staying on high beam until oncoming traffic flash.

They also cannot fix the pathetic light available on high beam.
