2012 Lightning adapter
Has anyone tried swapping the iPod connector in a 2012 ML to the new lightning connector? I'm not sure why it wouldn't work in the '12 but will in the '13.

Yes - the "new" MB-Lightning cable will only work on 2013 forward.
That MB-Lightning cable is like $65 - which includes paying Apple full bore so-to-speak for the Apple authentication chip - however that specific Apple authentication chip will not be recognized by the 2012 and earlier COMMAND systems.
The Good News - my customer report the Apple adapter DOES get recognized - and the BEST NEWS is that Apple adapter has a version which includes a 6" extension cable - and ALL my customers love having the extra length AND the adapter/cable is like $35
