2015 ML 350 rattle noise, possible causes, help needed
The rattle noise in the center console has been bothering me for over 6 months. I learned a little bit here and there. Now I think I finally found where the problem is. But I need help on how to fix it.
So here is what I did:
1) See pic 1. I took off the parts in this order, 1-the aluminum frame, 2-the lower section, 3-the radio (the middle section), then 4-the upper section of the center console.
2) See pic 2. this is what you see after the above is done. I placed an arrow pointing to a screw. I will focus on that region, and take a picture from a different angle. See pic 3.
3) See pic 3. Number 2 pointing to the screw I mentioned above. Now please look at the circle marked by number 1. This is where the element a (black color) and element b (black-brownish color) meet. You can see some white stuff in the center. The white stuff is part of element b. The white stuff is actually a broken surface caused by vibration between elements a and b. And that’s where the rattle noise comes from. I put a piece of felt tape at the screw (marks by number 2),which got rid of the noise for about 10 miles. Then the noise came back on. So I think I should definitely put something in between elements a and b. But I really don’t know how. Anyone here know how to do that? Many thanks!
(I went to a dealership, and told them the above. I specifically told them that putting a tape at the screw only temporarily fix the problem, and requested them to put something in between elements a and b. They agreed to do that, but they actually did not do it. I later found out that they just put a much thicker tape at the screw, which got rid of the noise for about 25 miles. I am really pissed, but what I can do other than leave them a bad review? So I think I need to fix this myself if it’s not too difficult)

And from what I can understand, no matter how thick is the rubber, attach it to the screw area will not solve the problem because the rattle noise is from the interaction of part a and b.

Any update on your fix?
