Got a low coolant light on. Do I need to get special coolant for the W166 diesel? or is coolant coolant?

When my low coolant light came on it was only very slightly low. Added a 1/4 cup or so of distilled water and it has been fine since.

You can top off with pure water, and it should be fine. If not, yes try to get the correct blue or red OEM coolant. Most generic coolants at auto parts stores are safe to mix, the MB stuff isn't corrosive, but still it's not worth having an issue due to wrong coolant compounds. Safer to add just water and dilute it a tiny bit than run it low, and it can't hurt anything.
