fuel system cleaner/additive

Hey everyone, I'm looking for input/feedback on a fuel system cleaner/additive for a 2014 ml350 bluetec. (if it matters the car has dpf/def deletes done)

saw a couple posts from 1 person really praising the BG 245 product, although that looks pretty pricey compared to the rest, and i also still haven’t found a location to buy it in Canada or ship it to Canada. I'd be fine with the price as long as the results are worth it compared to the other much cheaper products.

Some alternatives are:
Amsoil diesel all in one or diesel injector cleaner - haven’t found much regarding these products except on Amsoils site
Power Service diesel kleen + cetane boost - saw some comparative site reviews praising this as a good product - its also available at local Canadian tire stores and fairly priced
STP stuff - haven’t read much about these yet but i see they are also available at local Canadian tire stores
Liqui Moly products - they have a few targeted at diesel and cleaning the fuel system

looking to run this through for 1 tank or multiple tanks if need be to try and clean/clear as much as i can from the system.

any input on the products you’ve used or even heard about would be great. even recommendations for other products I haven’t listed that I can pour into a gas tank and help purge any crud out from my fuel system.

thanks

I have a 2013 ML Bluetec that I periodically run Power Service diesel kleen through, when I think about it. Have done that on and off since new. Not sure if it has done any good, but I will say at 53k miles it runs great and idles absolutely smooth, much smoother than my 2016 C300 ever has. Never knew if that is just a diesel thing or because of the Power Service product. Never tried any of the other products as I have never needed them so I can't help you there.

I use this stuff: Howes Meaner Power Kleaner.
https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/h...0941p.html#srp

30 ml treats 40 litres of fuel and over-treating is supposedly harmless. I usually throw 90 ml into a full tank. Absolutely no idea if it's helping anything, but they claim at least 5% increase in fuel mileage.

I did some research on this product and out of +/- 100 reviews, a full 80% seemed enthralled with the stuff. reports of increased fuel mileage and/or quieter engines.

Been running Amsoil's Diesel All-In-One, for the last 5K miles. Noticed a slight increase in throttle response, fuel mileage, and smoother idle. I think it is important to run some kind of additive that lubricates the fuel system with US diesel fuel.

thanks for the input everyone. I'll have to try some/all of those as more regular maintenance products every few months.

i called around to some shops in the area and the amsoil product was one of the ones mentioned, but the same place said that for a real good clean they would use the BG stuff over any of the other products as they had the best results from it.

couldn't find the BG stuff online anywhere to order to canada (amazon.com had it for 48.99 USD but it said doesn't ship to canada) but on the BG product site i found they had a dealer locator and there was actually plenty of dealers in my town/area.
Picked up a 1 quart bottle of BG 245 today and it was 49.99 CAD.

curious to see if this stuff lives up to the hype, for that price i sure hope so!

I'll use it on a fresh tank after i do the oil change, then in a few months maybe use some of the other products mentioned here.

Any idea if over doing it is possible with fuel system cleaners? I think not since a lot of them have the cetane improvers and that stuff is meant to be used in every single tank if you have not so great diesel in your area, but it never hurts to double check.
may not see a benefit from using it all the time, but im thinking maybe a bottle of something every 6 months or so for upkeep after the heavy BG stuff.

Howes claims that going over the specified amount is not harmful to the engine, dunno about the others.

If you're in Canada where we still have "proper" diesel (read: B5 or less), all you need to do is use a tank of Shell's "V-Power" diesel once in a blue moon as it containls all the fuel system cleaners, detergents and additives you'd ever need or want.

If you live in the US where you're constantly using the biodiesel crud that passes for diesel there, no amount of additives that you can put in the tank (i.e. dilute in the fuel) will do much good if any. You'd need to disconnect each injector from the fuel rail with the engine running and suck in concentrated injector cleaner directly.
