2014 ML 350 Troubleshooting

First post, first Mercedes, bought my 2014 ML 350 bluetec used with 60K on it, had it for a month.

I intend to work on it myself to lessen the cost of owing this fine vehicle and have been searching around on this forum and google to get my self acclimated. As luck would have it, my wife took it to NC and the check engine light came on. I had her take it to the dealer to get checked out and was told it has a bad EGT sensor, upstream from the turbo.Price on part is $100 (from web) and dealer wants $700 to change it, so looks like ill be doing this one myself.

The main question I have is what device I should use to read the codes and do I need a service manual? I have read that some of the diagnostic computers have the service manual digitally integrated into it? I was a mechanic in college and do controls for a living so I know my way around mechanical/electrical systems.

The more I read, the more I am confused as to what I should get, any suggestions or advice ?

If you are going to do you own work and troubleshooting on your W166, you really need a clone STAR Diagnostic system. With Xentry/DAS for reading codes, WIS (Workshop Information System), and EPC (Electronics Part Catalog), you'll have all the pieces you need to properly diagnose and perform maintenance and repairs.

Any recommendations on brand? I am reading about Chinese knock offs being blocked/problematic, don't want to by a paperweight or something that will take me weeks to get up and running properly.

You have two choices a genuine STAR system at over $20K price tag and costly yearly license fees, but it works and is fully supported. Or, you buy a clone system for ~$1000 and you have to deal with a system that needs TLC. Obviously most mortals buy the clone and deal with the quirks. There is a fantastic forum MHH Auto that helps members through the quirks. I would love to see Mercedes provide a scaled down version that was maybe locked to a couple vehicles for a reasonable price, for owners that want to service there own vehicles. I would buy one in a heartbeat.
