2014 ML350
2014 Ml350 transfer case

Our dealer is quoting me a $4,000 estimate to replace the transfer case which somehow went bad. ML has less than 80,000 miles and is no longer under warranty. The Good Will group agreed to give me 10% discount and dealer will do the same. MB is giving me run around since I am not the original owner. The car was last serviced in June 2019 and no mention of transfer case recommendations or issues. Any suggestions before I send a nasty letter to MB?

Call a local independent M-B mechanic and ask for a quote. What specifically is "bad"? Chains are known to need replacing. This should not cost $4,000.

The dealer said parts are broken inside but wouldn’t specify. They couldn’t give me a reason why this happened. I’ll call local MB mechanic.

They need to provide more info than "stuff is broken". Ask for a list of parts, or the principal part(s).

Stuff is broken? My 12 year old nephew could determine that lol. Get that that local MB shop on the phone ASAP!

Transfer Case

So today the dealer said there is no chain inside of the transfer case and that they are assuming parts are broken inside from the noise it’s making. They can’t explain how it got broke and that this is unusual to happen with a car with only 64,000 miles. But, because it’s past the warrant period they will only give me a 10% discount. They are blaming prior owner who may have gotten transfer case wet, blah blah blah. They are now concerned about the transmission if they do replace the transfer case saying it will be tighter and may effect the transmission. I’m dumbfounded! Waiting to hear what they say about the transmission as they are draining the trans and checking for any metal or problems.

My solution would be buy a used transfer or transfer and transmission and replace it myself.

If you aren't too 'flash with the spanners do the same through an Indi.

If transfer failures are rare the odds of a bad used on is very low.

Also because the failure rate is low, demand is low for used ones so a bit of shopping around could save you a bundle of money.

I asked dealer today about the chain inside the transfer case and mechanic said it doesn’t have one. ???
