Rear shocks fail

Okay just had my '14 ML350 go for a service B. The car only has 52k kilometers on the motor and the car only drove 2k from 2018. I got a surprise call from my service folks that BOTH rear shocks are leaking and to add to the injury my extended limited warranty was up 2 weeks ago. Car was scheduled for a service 1 month ago but since it was stored, barely ran and because of the covid thing I did not bother pushing for the scheduled service B. F*ck F*ck F*ck. Wrote a letter to MB corporate to ask for a relaxation of that end date. My question is how the heck will both rear shocks be leaking on a 52k kilometer car? The car is perfect no troubles at all but shocks leaking at 52k is just unacceptable.

Anyone of you guys experience shocks needing replacement this early? Car has airmatic.

As an aside Hyundai in Australia has extended all new vehicle warranties by 3 months to allow for the lack of use due to Covid.

Great Customer relations ploy.

I can't see Mercedes doing anything similar.

My 2013 ML350 BT had a leaking rear shock at around 170k km. I changed it myself and changed the other rear one as well. You can get them on Rockauto, they're not that expensive (unless you have airmatic suspension). The job isn't that bad if you have proper tools. I'm sure there are videos on YouTube or somewhere online to help you do it.

Now I think my rear passenger wheel bearing is dying. I can hear a sound coming from the rear that increases with speed...

Good luck.

I don't mind changing at +100km but at 53k? I babied this truck and never went off-road. I have airmatic so not sure how hard it will be.

You have Airmatic! What did you expect? That is typical and normal for Airmatic to leak early, very few owners are able to make it to 160,000km without the Airmatic system leaking. Why do you think so man owner immediately switch over to non-airmatic as soon as they develop a leak?

The bags are not the problem. It is the shocks. Two different things. I hear a lot of problems with the bags but not the shocks.

Ask and you shall receive. MB Canada will be replacing both of my shocks for free. That there just saved me +$3200. Maybe the record of the cars going in and out of their dealership made them give in. I'm a happy camper now. No more leaking shocks next week! I did ask about the part numbers of the shocks and was told that they updated the numbers so I will be getting a revised shocks. Maybe the old part has a defect or sometime that causes premature wear and they have updated it for a better part.

Both of my rear ML 350 shocks failed at about 30K miles. ML went up on lift to have brake service & oil started pouring out of the shocks. Airmatic equipped ML 350. Cost about $700 in parts + labor. Ouch!
