How to remove intake manifold?

For context I replaced my spark plugs using SeniorLeigh’s video on youtube. But I was really struggling with the back plug on the driver’s side. So I started the process from the fcpeuro video which involved removing the intake manifold because it looks like it provides way more room to work.

But I can’t get to the back two e-torx bolts for the cover. I am trying to figure out how to remove the center back foam wall as I was able to get the left and right pieces off, but not the center one.

In the fcpeuro video, there is easy access to back two screws on the E class, and the other videos show similar easy access on GLK and C. But the M class is very different, maybe it is just apparent on my mode year design and future models were revised, idk.

I will post a picture soon.

I was able to replace all spark plugs but two ignition coils had to be sacrificed due to how stuck they were! Just waiting for my replacements to come in the mail from FCP and then I can button everything back up and take it for a drive!

The WIS calls for removing that center firewall pad but I gave up trying. Even if you get all the fasteners out the wiring harness prevents getting it out. I did it without removing the manifold. Driver's side is a real slog. Passenger side is easy. M-B sells a special paste to use on the coil boots so they don't stick - Part # A 002 989 80 51.

Exactly! Even when you have the panels unscrewed, the wiring harness is still attached to the panel!! So stupid of MB! It looks like u can disconnect the plastic holding the harness from the panel but there is no easily discernable way to do it. So what do people do?!
here are the pics

Search hard for the WIS on intake manifold removal. I think it has been posted on this site.

I changed plugs without removing the manifold. As stated above the drivers side is a royal pain.

I have never found any instruction on this site or any other for intake removal specific to the M166 with the M276 engine, which is unique due to the fact that the firewall slopes over the top of the manifold. The two bolts at the rear of the manifold cannot be extracted without removing the firewall pad.

There are many guides, but the W166 and possibly X166 are unique in the fact that the padded wall slopes over the two bolts as vinceC posted above. Can you confirm that there is a guide that you have seen specific to the W166?

Also, what is WIS? In the watch world, it means Watch Idiot Sauvant.

WIS = Workshop Information System. The official factory repair documentation system. It is a subscription service. Fairly expensive at $75 for 24hr. access with weekly, monthly and annual subscriptions available at much greater cost. There are copies on eBay but I have never used one. Mitchell has moderately priced versions of the WIS at eautorepair.net. Not as comprehensive or as easy to use as factory WIS but for most DIY jobs it will suffice.

yes! I just took it for a drive around the neighborhood and very smooth all the way! Just need to button up the remaining plastics now.

And thank you for the post about the WIS! That definitely cleared it up for me!

Removing the two E10 screws for intake manifold 2014 ML350

Hi,

I was replacing all my Cam solenoids and position sensors and 6 Spark plugs. I too ran into issue removing the two E10 screws from the tight space. I searched a few forums with no luck for a 2014 ML 350 intake manifold removal.

I got lucky and I found in my arsenal this mini ratchet made by Wadsworth Falls manufacturing company. Combined with 1/4” spline adapter + 1/4” U joint + 1/4” E10 deep socket.

It is a very tight space and it took time, for both passenger and driver side. Maybe total 45mins to an hour making sure I did not lose my small tools or the screws.

Wanted to share that it can be done.

Much appreciated! I should buy a similar setup to have on hand just in case!
