Hi All,
I've got a small amount of oil in my turbo (found when doing Oil filter change), see pics. Is this from a failing PCV valve? If so, it should be covered under the Bluetec warranty, right? Thanks for the help!
So nothing to be concerned with? I thought I'd seen some threads saying that the oil will break some sensors below the Turbo if you don't deal with it.
The orange seal on my PCV has a metal strap holding it in. I had bought the replacement seals when I was doing the oil filter, but I think they changed the PCV model and now its locked in place.
I would be diligent with making sure that the PCV is functioning correctly. I replaced the valve on my 2012 ML350 when I was replacing the oil cooler seals which were leaking. The vehicle has only 86,000 miles. See photos of the soot accumulation.

How do you check if its working, just pull the valve and check the diaphragm? Any other source of oil besides the oil cooler seals (I changed the turbo seals and air filter seals when doing the oil filter). Also, mine's a 2014 so I think its got the new oil cooler seals, but I've heard that's not a guarantee.

mine also had the metal strap holding the original seal, but when I picked up a new seal from the dealer it was a newer revised seal that didn't reach or need the metal strap (just like the orange seal in the last photo rmassmann posted above) . I can't recall if I cut off the metal strap since it wasn’t needed anymore, or if I just left it in place and squeezed the old seal out. I've done 2 B services since then and I replace that seal each time, there have been no issues on the newer seal that didn't need the metal strap.
I also find oil in that area each time when changing out the seal to the turbo, but there is never any oil leaking out which from what I have seen is what can cause issues if the leak is dripping on something below it.
replacing PCV is on my to do list to hopefully resolve or minimize the amount of oil that gets sucked out by the turbo. Seeing photos like what rmassmann has shared makes me want to replace pcv and open more up and try to clean up, just not sure if i want to put that much work in. Also concerned that replacing the pcv won't prevent the turbo from sucking oil out, which I think from what I’ve read will still occur to a small degree even with a properly working pcv. Maybe a catch can would then be a way to resolve it, but who knows whether all that work is even worth it.
The soot issue was found when I replaced the oil cooler seals. You have to remove quite a few items to get to the oil cooler including the two intake charge manifolds. I cleaned each of these manually the best I could, MB services would have replaced them with recondition manifolds and sent the old ones out to be cleaned and checked. The PCV valve on my MB is right up against the fire wall and is not the easiest thing to remove and reinstall. Only 2 screws, but almost no room to wrench them. I learned that I need to be more careful as I the return fitting on the excess fuel return line and they only thing you can purchase to fix it is the complete assembly.
Figured i post an update, I swapped the egr PCV (edit) figured it was worth a shot to eliminate the oil. It was original, hard to see but manufacturing date in early 2014. You can see the difference between new and old below. The job wasn't as bad as I thought based on YouTube tutorials, but i was extra careful not to drop bolts. Maybe an hour or so from putting coveralls on to completion?
Is that part from the rear of the engine passenger side (Right Hand Side). If so that is not the EGR valve, but the Air/Oil Separator valve. Crank case vapors are sucked in from the crank case and the oil is separated from the vapors to drain back into the crank case.

thank you for sharing the update, I'm glad to hear it wasn't as difficult of a job and it makes me more eager to do mine.
Mind sharing the youtube videos you saw for completing this? I've seen a few but none showed exactly what to loosen or remove to free up the back panels to get the extra room you need to fit a socket back there, I'm hoping this was shown in the videos you saw.
Also what was the part number of the new PCV you got?
My dealer was giving me 642 010 17 91 but when i checked with FCP Euro they gave me 642 010 24 91. I was thinking they both will probably work but maybe the FCP Euro one is just the newest version given the higher part #.
