Power Output ML550 M278 Engine 300Kw & 320Kw

I've seen engine outputs for the 4.7Ltr twin turbo engine at 300kw (402 hp and 443 Ib ft) and then an upgraded number at 320Kw and 700Nm (429 hp and 516 Ib ft). Does anyone know if the engines are in fact different and what the difference is? I've read that 300kw specification is in fact MB under quoting the output in earlier models and they're all 320Kw.

All responses appreciatted.

The early ML550s were the lower rating and about 2014/2015 they increased rating. My dealer told me that they were exactly the same, and MB under-rated the engine intentionally in early models. Was all marketing. Only needed 402HP to compete, but when the revised competition (Mostly BMW X5) bumped theirs up mid cycle, which MB knew was coming, they could immediately bump their number up to compete.

Based on that, the rating is unknown at best. Wikipedia is NOT the final word, but trusting an MB dealer is suspect at best. And the dealer putting the manufacturer lying for marketing purposes, makes you wonder what else they are lying about (like fake engine temperatures?)

Therefore, the rating of the engine can only be assured after an independent test on a dyno, anything else is smoke and mirrors.

Yes, thank you. I suspected this and had read similar elsewhere. Many have said they wanted to keep the power gap between the 4.7 and the 5.5 as wide as possible. The Renntech site also suggests the power numbers for the stock engine were underquoted.

When renntec put the ML550 on the Dyno for tune development they stated it was actually 448hp and not the 429hp that Mercedes claimed. They said Mercedes underrated the power in the marketing. It’s on their website. Their stage 1 tune brings it to 540hp.

I wonder if the experimental error is below 5%; otherwise, 429 = 448. It makes no difference. For a difference of 20%, I will take the results at face value. Of course with error bars

It just placebo effect, and feel good results
