Bad sound quality bluetooth telephone only

Bad sound quality bluetooth telephone only
Does anyone else have an issue with bad sound quality on the in built bluetooth telephone connection and yet the bluetooth music streaming is great quality and no issue at all?
I had an older iPhone 11 and the quality of bluetooth calls was both quiet and bad quality. I was told the cars can be picky and some phones just dont work.
I have this week bought an iPhone 14. This has newer bluetooth than the iPhone 11. I was praying it would improve the sound quality but it has not.
Firstly its too quiet and no amount of turning up volume makes it louder.
Secondly the sound quality I hear is terrible. It doesnt matter if I have a good signal or a bad one, the voice isn’t clear.
But when I am playing music through the bluetooth its great. Excellent loud volume and excellent sound quality. It makes no sense to me.
I am hoping someone else has had this and might tell me what I can try to improve. Thank you.

2013 ML350 4MATIC FLEX
My wife told me the speakers were blown in her ML350. I turned down the music volume 2 clicks on her iPhone and the distortion stopped. Presuming the iPhone output volume output was too high and the Bluetooth level was overdriving the car bluetooth.
I'm not an iPhone guy but wonder if your iPhone has separate volume control for music and phone.
