Muffler Delete on CL65

I deleted my rear cans today on my CL65. Now the car sounds pretty bad @ss at start up. The OEM mufflers look to be pretty straight-through so I wasn't really expecting any sort of noticeable hp pick-up. I had the work done at MBS (Mandrel Bending Solutions). They are a highly touted exhaust shop in Pasadena, MD. They did a great job of setting the tips pretty much exactly as stock. I would highly recommend them and may go back to them to have them do a full 3" exhaust from the downpipes back. They said that they had done a couple of AMGs before mine and seemed pretty knowledgeable.

Interesting notes:

I will try to weigh the stock muffler when I get home tonight. My guess is that they weigh a good 15-20lbs each.

The turbos seem to spool up a little quicker and seems to breathe better up top...I hate seat of the pants assessments...so I might have to do some 60-130mph passes to see if it is my imagination.

I am not sure yet if I can do the MIR track day tomorrow...unless I do some conference calls from the track.

As you already know I had the muff's deleted long ago, but just few days ago I went back for round (2) 3" Dia Down Pipes about 4-5" dwn from Turbos now, then added 3" Hiflo Cats & added new bungs to recieve the oen O2's (NO check engine lights) sounds like Marko's CL65 w/cutt-outs in his vidz.

Seriously love it!!!! amazing sounding motor! w/lots of decell-pop-burble...Making a cold start n' lil drive vid tamara, so far it feels as if the powerband has risen dramatically (a norm pull would be stellar from 50-100 w/slight degrade in HP past 100-155, NOT anymore pulls freaky hard @ 100mph like it was @ 65-70 then continues to pull like this all thru 155 cutoff...

PS.. Lost another 44+lbs from the OEM primary cat removal...You gotta do this mod bro, even if no HP was gained doing this (which is impossible) the extra sound is like an Exotic Euro combined w/off shore racing boat rumble! Ads a lil' more turbo BOV noises too..Best part NO droan in any gear period!

Nice job!

I don't have too much "popping" on decell...more of a "burbly" sound. I may go for the high flow cats and full 3" exhaust at some point.

I weighed my mufflers over the weekend. They weigh 16lbs each. So it was a nice 30+lbs weight savings.

I don't think Marko has Cut outs, he has cat delete and X pipe. I am the only one running with cut outs, they sounded loud as hell..

I think I'm gonna do cutouts too. After the resonators but before the mufflers. Really just doing it for sound purposes. QTP now a remote control for theirs, that allow you to open them in 10% increments. I like that better then full open/close.

My advice would be to just delete the mufflers on your car. The SL600 has much smaller mufflers to begin with. The CL65 doesn't have resonators (probably because of the huge mufflers). So if you left your resonators on and deleted the mufflers, the exhaust noise would probably still be more muted than mine.

Are your cutt-outs open during run in your link? Doesn't sound like it? Do you have a vid w/them open?

Well...I would still recommend the muffler delete for an SL600...it will probably still sound more muted because of your little ...girly....puny 5.5L engine...

Learn something new everyday.

I still like the cutout idea though. Exhaust drone is like the 2nd worst thing in the world I hate. Plus, I would need to find some AMG tips and I just don't want it to turn into a hack job. And then god forbid I hate the sound, or it's just too damn loud. The new remote control cutouts allow me to "turn up" the volume at will, and I like that idea.

Oh, and the thing I hate the most are super hot Trannies. It's only a matter of time before I get fooled.

Trust me, I've removed everything & replaced w/hiflos there's absolutely ZERO DROAN. & if you drive normally in (D) it's very tame...DooooEEttttttt

The cost of cutt-outs w/install is prohibitive, & w/out removing fact cats (they're huge) there's no room to install cut-outs unless further down the trough by stk muff'sOnce you put her on a lift you'll see what I mean.

Yeah man, that's the **** right there. I love the way these V12s sound in full gallop with no mufflers. Problem is, I don't always want it that loud. I live in an uppity neighborhood with rules. And by rules, I mean that you can't even change the color of your mailbox without a vote. They also called the cops on me and sent out a mass mailer because I was bookin' up and down the street on my mini-motorcycles. I bought a few of them and started a mini-motorcycle gang in the neighborhood. Ended up having to give them all away to my nephews.

So, I think I'm gonna go with the QTP cutouts. They have a new remote control module that allows you to open them up at stages between 0-100%.

Gonna try to get it done before 12/5 MIR track day.

I have my muffler deleted and it sounds great. Marcin is doing a full 3 in exhaust from the turbos back, with the cat deleted as well. Should have a sound clip next week, can not wait to hear what it will sound like.
