To keep my fellow Americans updated, I received an email from Mercedes-Benz Canada and I can definitely obtain a letter of compliance which comes at a cost.
If there are any serious buyers from the US, I’ll arrange to get the letter, no problem.

How difficult is the process to bring the car back to the U.S. ? Is it very costly besides transportation?

I’ve personally never done it but from what I’ve read it’s not too complicated. As long the Canadian owner has the letter of compliance, it’s just a matter of paying the taxes and transportation.

I imported mine. I paid to have it done, but it can be done on your own.
As others stated you need a letter of compliance from the manufacturer. You have to pay a 2.5% (i believe) fee plus misc other fees.
The challenge is it's unlikely you'll be able to purchase the car, get through import/customs in one trip, have it titled and have plates all done in one day to be able to drive it home yourself. You can purchase it and get through customs and have it transported over. then do the rest back in the US.
