Maybach 57S or S65 AMG? Which would you prefer and why?

Here in NYC, there are several chauffer driven Maybachs and very few people stop and look. The RR on the onther hand, people always stop and stare. The car has a presence that commands attention
Not to compare, my parents have an old RR Silver Shadow LWB at their house in MI that sits in the garage for the most part to match the grand old English tudor. The car drives like crap but its very comfy and quiet in the back seat.

The RR vs. Maybach comparison is an old one, but I thought I still add a few points.
1. Strangely enough, not only is the Maybach in the RR league, it has been widely recognized as being the more luxurious of the two and simply being the best car to be chauffeured in (the 62). This used to be the longtime RR stronghold.
2. The Maybach was designed to be a background car. It was also designed as a long distance business cruiser and that goal has certainly been accomplished. When it comes to the way a car looks is in the end a question of personal taste...
For the primary target audience, attracting attention is normally considered a negative, but I guess some people are desperate; for that the Phantom is unbeatable.
3. Price. I am always amazed by the comments of many on the board that a $300k-$400k car should perfect in every little aspect. While the Maybach and the Rolls Royce are very well built (due to their German ownership), that is usually quite the opposite.
Rolls Royces and Bentleys used to virtually break in front of your eyes. Not just electrical, but mechanical as well.
Same with sports cars; Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin have been just about the most unreliable cars money can buy.
Ultimately, the price is primarily driven by low volume and only to a smaller extend by materials or manufacturing methods. R&D costs need to be recouped. Simple as that...

This thread is 10 months old....I've had a chance to spend a little time in a 57S (being chauffeured, that is) and with the advent of the new S65, it would seem the decision would now be even tougher....W221 S65....or....57S?
Which would you select?

Of course I would choose a 57 S over a MB S65 ...but I would much rather own a EWB Phantom over a Maybach any day. Maybach is a very nice car ...but that is not enough really. Lets be honest here, why do people buy Maybachs and Rolls-Royces? ...primarily they are bought as status symbols ..and most buyers for these cars are almost certainly self-made American, Russian, or Chinese business people -- not old European aristocrats like the marketing people would like us to imagine. There really is not much that is aristocratic about either of these cars -- they epitomize nouveau-riche taste. The S 65 is also a car for the newly-rich.
Anyone who criticizes the Phantom for being too "flashy" is seriously misunderstanding why people buy these types of cars in the first place -- they are supposed to make a statement, inspire awe in others ...and BTW, the Maybach is hardly inconspicuous when it dives past you on the street.
The Phantom has a true sense of style, which is something the Maybach seems to lack a bit. I love these hidden 12" TV screens.

i have had the chance to drive both, the 57s has more power, the RR doesnt, and i dont like how big it feels when you are driving it, you can be doing 120 in the 57s and actually control the car.

....and if you have ever seen a Maybach on the street you will know it is not as discreet as you suggest ....everyone notices it.

I dont't know why, but I've been dreaming about a Maybach 57 again. A truly bespoke vehicle, and leftover 2009s can be had at bargain prices. My heart desires a 57s, perhaps a Zeppelin edition.

Im so happy I can say Ive been driven in a Maybach around New York at Christmas (1-2 Years ago) And it was beautiful, It hurt to get out of it :-(
But, Im going back to New York this christmas and Im staying at the same hotel, so fingers crossed!
Also, that hotel, previously Had a RR Phantom, and sold it for the Maybach! The driver says he prefers the maybach!
So, I'd go maybach everyday!

Questions about the maybach
Hello all- I'm new to the forum, and this is my first post, so I hope it's the correct area in which to ask my questions. I'm thinking of trading in / selling my '07 s600 towards an 04 maybach 57. The closest Maybach dealer to me is an hour away. My main questions are-
1) any specific maintenance problems on the 04s for which I should look out?
2) are these things maintenance nightmares? I've looked at the car faxes of a few and it seems as though hey may be a little persnickety.
3) can I take it to my regular MBz dealer for maintenance work?
4) I'm 6'5" and long in the torso. How is the headroom relative to an s class?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me.
