McLaren....

So McLaren has been loosing MANY key engis so far this season! Alonso still thinks MACA will be competative in 2007 Whats your take ?

Alonso admits second title is 'close'
Fernando Alonso says he does not regret signing a contract to switch to McLaren for the 2007 season.

"I know that next year they will have the best car," the Spaniard, on a flying visit to Barcelona and almost drowned in the cheers of countrymen, was quoted as saying by AS.

Alonso admitted that he is 'getting close' to repeating the achievement in a Renault.

Nevertheless, Mercedes-powered McLaren is the next target, and he insisted: "I will try to win the title there. But my first task is to finish the job with Renault with a second title."

Alonso, however, revealed that dominating in 2006 is not as straightforward as last year, when McLaren and Kimi Raikkonen were the main foes.

"Last year McLaren were unreliable," he said, "so that often when we scored we could pull out some gaps. This year Ferrari are very reliable and have responded to us well. They are a complicated rival."

Alonso's comments, of course, are backed up by F1's recent trip to Indianapolis, where Michael Schumacher's red car dominated the event.

"We were not competitive," he conceded.

I think Alonso knew that Renault did not have a long term commitment in F1, so sustaining a title challenge beyond these 2 was a tall order. Look at what happened to Benetton after Schumi's 2 titles. Renault now has announced that they have a long term commitment, but up to now Briatore has not even confirmed he'll be there next year. On the other hand, I think Alonso wants a long term commitment like what Mika had. It is not unusual for WDC's to move over to lesser teams that will sustain their title challenges and fill their pockets in the process. Now, a 3-peat with 2 different teams would propel Alonso to world's-greatest status... and we all know McLaren is due.

I think Williams is due before MACA. They switched to BS this year to have an advantage next year.
