record for the fastest average speed lap ever done in a Formula One car,
161.484mph (259.827km/h) which was previously held for 17 years again by

The Colombian recorded a time of 1.20.264 in the 51st minute to take
pole, knocking his team mate Ralf Schumacher off the top slot. Michael
Schumacher fought back and gave it everything he could, including using
the unusually strategy of running two flying laps consecutively, but had
to settle for second place. Ralf eventually ended up third.

Rubens Barrichello will start from P4, after losing most of practice
this morning to a seized engine more bad luck for the Brazilian. Kimi
Raikkonen is fifth despite a huge accident in the final minutes of the
session. The Finn was travelling slowly on an out lap when Takuma Sato
came up to pass him on his timed effort. Raikkonens McLaren made
contact with the Japanese drivers Jordan and they had a very high-speed
collision that thankfully saw them both walk away seemingly unharmed,
although red flags were brought out while the debris was cleared away.
