Italian Qualifying

Juan Pablo Montoya smashed one of the longest standing records in the
history of the FIA Formula One World Championship, when he set a new
record for the fastest average speed lap ever done in a Formula One car,
161.484mph (259.827km/h) which was previously held for 17 years again by
Keke Rosberg, who set 160.959mph (258,983km/h) at Silverstone in 1985.
The Colombian recorded a time of 1.20.264 in the 51st minute to take
pole, knocking his team mate Ralf Schumacher off the top slot. Michael
Schumacher fought back and gave it everything he could, including using
the unusually strategy of running two flying laps consecutively, but had
to settle for second place. Ralf eventually ended up third.

Rubens Barrichello will start from P4, after losing most of practice
this morning to a seized engine more bad luck for the Brazilian. Kimi
Raikkonen is fifth despite a huge accident in the final minutes of the
session. The Finn was travelling slowly on an out lap when Takuma Sato
came up to pass him on his timed effort. Raikkonens McLaren made
contact with the Japanese drivers Jordan and they had a very high-speed
collision that thankfully saw them both walk away seemingly unharmed,
although red flags were brought out while the debris was cleared away.

Eddie Irvine grimly held on to sixth place to record Jaguars best
qualifying effort of the season. David Coulthard had another
disappointing session to start from P7, Pedro de la Rosa also managed a
positive showing for eighth place, Jacques Villeneuve is ninth and Mika
Salo ended up tenth.

The two Italians line up eleventh and twelfth tomorrow, with Jarno
Trulli ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella. Allan McNish is thirteenth, Felipe
Massa is fourteenth and Nick Heidfeld is fifteenth. Olivier Panis will
be disappointed with sixteenth, as will Button with seventeenth. Takuma
Sato is eighteenth, Mark Webber nineteenth and Alex Yoong twentieth
qualifying without a problem on his first GP back in the Minardi.

It was a gloriously sunny day with track temperatures in the early
thirties for qualifying and similar weather is expected tomorrow.
