Kimi was penalized!
Raikkonen penalised for Sato clash 14 Sep 2002
McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen has had his fastest qualifying time for the Italian Grand Prix deleted after being judged to have caused his collision with Jordan's Takuma Sato.
Both drivers were summoned by race stewards following the accident which came late in Saturday's qualifying hour at Monza. The FIA later issued a statement, which read:
"Having heard the explanations of both drivers and viewed video evidence, the Stewards of the Meeting decide to impose a penalty in accordance with Article 119 of 2002 FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations to delete the fastest qualifying time of the Driver of car number 4 (Kimi Raikkonen) for causing a collision contrary to Article 53 of the aforementioned regulations."
The penalty means that Raikkonen drops one place to sixth on the grid, promoting Jaguar's Eddie Irvine to fifth.

Whether it was intentional or not, he really DID punt Sato off the track. The replay showed Sato already taking to the grass to avoid Kimi, but KR kept edging over to the curb, setting up for the chicane. I really wonder whether KR saw him.
FIA seems to be enforce these penalties more and more this year. Not sure why, because there doesn't appear to be widespread misbehaving... at least not like the Jean Alesi, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell "Brake testing" days of years ago.

Apparantly, Sato was running 2-3 fast laps in a row, instead of the usual out lap-fast lap-in lap sequence. Kimi thought that Sato was on his in lap so accidently squeezed him off the track because he assumed Sato was slowing down and giving up the line.
Point is moot - another motor blow-up for Kimi. DC doesn't seem to have nearly as many of these failures, wonder if it has something to do with Raikkonen's driving style?

lars,
I beleive that's the way it works. The driver downshifts with paddles to select the gear he wants. The car's transmission takes care of the shifting to prevent over-reving the motor.
Of course this prevents the driver from making a mistake while shifting that damages the motor. Maybe KR uses the engine to brake a little more than DC does, or perhaps he's rougher over the kerbs. Honda discovered that they were having engine failures at Spa because the cars were bottoming out on Eau Rouge. This bottoming out was causing the engine block to flex slightly putting excessive pressure on the main thrust bearing and leading to the motor's eventual failure.
I think that DC's driving style is a little smoother than KR's youthful aggressiveness. I beleive that DC would have been more at home in the mid-80s F1 scene when a driver had to baby a car a lot more to get it to last a race distance.
