new F1 rules ratified

Here are the new rules ratified today (Jan 21) by the Formula 1 Technical Working Group.

Traction control and automatic gearboxes will now be banned by this year's British Grand Prix (July 20). Launch control will also be banned from this point, provided the teams can operate their current clutches manually.

Car-to-pit telemetry will be allowed in 2003, as will driver-to-pit radios - although pit-car transmissions can no longer be scrambled and must be accessible to host TV broadcasters on a specified frequency.

The rules on spare cars were also relaxed, cars damaged in either qualifying or practice can be replaced. however, these will have to start at the back of the grid. Spare cars will also be available should there be a red flag in the opening two laps of a race.

Cheers, BT
