Instrument Panel Issue... HELP!!!

I know this is posted in the W202 forum, but I thought it might be more relevant here. Thanks for your help...

Hello all, 97 C280 Sport.

I am having an issue with my gauges. The Speedometer, Fuel Indicator, Tachometer, and Temperature Guage are not working. Everything else seems to be working. The fuel guage stays at the bottom but clicks like it is trying to move up. It almost looks like a clock ticking. Otherwise, it is not working. Does anybody know what this might be? I am stumped. The fuses are good, the connections look good. Is there a control module that I might be able to replace? Thanks for your help, I appreciate it...

Bueller?... Bueller?... Anyone?... Anyone?...

They started working for a moment yesterday, now they are dead again. Any ideas? I will be chasing wiring this weekend.

Most likely you will need a new instrument cluster. Hard to say without trouble shooting but that is likely.

Is it normal for these things to go bad? I understand that my car is 8 yrs old, but come on... You would think that there would be something repairable to that...

Is the odometer reading stored in the cluster, or a computer? Also, I saw a little control module behind the isntrument cluster. I am not sure what it does, but it is connected to the cluster.

Well, they are working around 1 in 5 to 7 starts of the car. Terribly interesting. I wonder if it might be a ground issue or something. Plus, does anybody know what the module wired to the cluster is that sits behind the cluster?

Does anyone know how to take apart the instrument cluster to clean the pegs? I don't want to break anything... Thanks, Jeff

I know I am resurrecting an old thread, but today I am having the exact same problem in my 1997 w202. Started this morning when I started the car. All fuses are good.

Anyone know what how to fix this?

Well, I finally got the issue fixed. The problem was in the cluster itself, not the wiring. I sent the cluster to bb-reman.com and they fixed it. They have seen this failure before. The price was reasonable at $130 which included all new bulbs and return overnight shipping. (Much better than the $1330 for the cluster quoted to me by the MB dealer.)

Note: BB-reman said 2-3 business day turn around time, but that stretched into 6 business days. ymmv.

I found bba-reman.com, but they are in England.
I'd like to know more about repairing the instrument cluster, can you check the website you reference

Waybomb - sorry about that. I made a typo and it should have read bba-reman.com. They have a facility in the US too, which is where I shipped mine. Choose a country on their website (upper left side) and it changes all the contact info appropriately.
