w123 300d engine rebuild....$2500 yah or nah?
ive got a 1979 300d that has been sitting for about 2 years.... the car has 100K orginal miles on the odometer.... had it towed to a good independent mb shop... they worked on it and said that the engine was shot... that it has lost compression....
the shop quoted me $2500 to rebuild the engine and install it........ $2500 total for parts and labor...
is that a good price? what would you do?
the cars kinda sentimental to me... my mothers first mercedes... as well as my own...

Unless your mom didn't take care of it properly it shouldn't 'loose compression' from wear at 100K miles even after sitting for two years. Did it run well when last used? $2500 seems low for a complete quality rebuild. What will they do for that amount?

Losing Compression
I guess it depends on why it's losing compression.
It could be the piston rings... super major job. That would indeed be a complete teardown and since you are that far they might as well do the crankshaft bearings, rings, cylinder walls, etc...
If it's the valvetrain that is leaking (intake, exhaust valves) it may be less expensive. Take the heads off, send them to a machine shop.
Maybe it's something simpler, like a blown head gasket.
If it was a head gasket it could almost be a DIY if you had a very good set of tools.
At the high end you would be getting a deal, at the low end you would be getting skrewed.

Can't say I've ever heard of a mercedes 300d engine needing rebuilding at that sort of mileage, it's usually the bodywork that falls apart first.
I'd check out the head gasket first. I assume it is running, how does it compare to the last time you heard it run. A 123 engine should be easy for DIY.
I was told a coupla months back I needed a new cylinder head on my 124 by a reputable shop, I was'nt convinced so took the head off myself put on a new gasket and it runs perfect again.
