1986 190D 2.5 transmission problem, please help!!

Hi, I am having problems with my MB 1986 190D 2.5. For some reason the car drives but does not switch out of first gear. Actually, it doesnt switch gears manually as well. Is this a common recall problem with this car? and can someone help me fix this problem? please help!!!
