At very low speeds mostly first and second I hear a very deep growl that sounds like it is coming from a very large gear. 40M miles and it seems to be getting worse. Any ideas what this could be?

You definitely don't want to be driving your car in this condition. Take it to a reputable transmission shop (if not the stealership). Aren't you still under factory warrenty?
