Your descriptions are accurate. Wurth's sells it as a paste or in a can. It takes thirty seconds to apply. The one pound can of paste does cost $25, but that's enough paste to do every brake job you and I will ever have done in both our lifetimes. Being a private business, I suppose they can charge whatever they want, but I honestly had no idea it was "optional". When I buy aftermarket pads, a little tube of the paste is included. Unfortunately, this sounds like a cheap ploy for the service writer to squeeze an extra $25 out of the customer.
How did the writer phrase it -
"Yes sir, we at Mercedes-Benz of YourTown are fully qualified to service your car to the highest standards on Earth. Regarding the brake job, would you like the car to perform as it did when it was brand new, or would you prefer our "$25-off Holiday Special" wherein the car will squeal like a pig that's knee deep in a piranha tank?"
