MAF replacement

I just replaced the MAF in my 2001 E320 and the car seemed initially to be running smoother. I cleared the check engine codes in the car and everything seemed to be fine. the codes did not come back. Now, a day later, when the car is sitting at a stop light the tachometer varies between 500 and 1000. In addition, when I start the car now, the car usually does not initially start. I turn the button, and the car turns over and revs up, then dies immediately (within 1 second). If I either hold they key turned to keep it cranking or try starting it a second time, it starts up just fine.

Could this be caused by a DOA MAF?

How can I test the MAF?

Is there anything else that could cause these symptoms?

Did an authorized MB service center change your MAF? If so, take it back to them. If not, that may be the problem.

I changed the MAF myself. bought the part on ebay. I might have to buy a maf from the dealer...then if that fixes it I'm going to have to hope I can get a refund from the seller. : /

Good luck w/ that! Sometimes I think it might be cheaper to just go to the dealer in the first place. The time & money people spend trying to save money sometimes is just not worth it... IMO

"...reports that total failure of the MAF sensor made the engine race, then stall, so if you get this symptom the MAF is the first thing you should check."
Found this on one of the many sites discussing the MAF. Some of the sites even talk about how to troubleshoot it. I was going to clean mine at 100K miles but looking at the wires with the air cleaner housing off they look clean already. When you think about it, unless your air cleaner isn't working....or oil is coming from it....you would have to have a valve problem to get gunk on the MAF wires. There is even a cleaning cycle the wires go through after the engine is turned off.

If the car is equipped OEM Bosch and the part you bought on eBay is genuine Bosch - then it is the same part you would get from the dealer. Bosch does not used different specifications for IAM and OE or OES parts.

I haven't had time to pull the core of the maf to test it, but I may have discovered the problem to be the battery. So far the car has not triggered any CEL codes, and I took the car to autozone the other day and according to their battery tester, my car battery is testing bad (odd that the battery would fail so soon). I was being lazy at the time, however; I had them test the battery using the leads in the engine compartment. Should I instead have them retest the battery using the leads straight off the battery under the rear bench?
