"Key" Strangeness
2002 E55:
Remote/key with 4 buttons:
panic
open
close
trunk open
Remote functions work fine, but when I put this key in the ignition, it does not release the lock in the ignition itself, and the key will not turn. Other key works fine, though it is my wife's so transmission behavior is less entertaining
Assumin problem was battery related, these have been replaced.
Is this "key" broken? Any ideas/suggestions most welcome.
Regards,
cb

The key does not need to have a battery to unlock the wheel and start the car. The ignition 'switch' reads the code from the key through the red plastic round window at the end/tip. If that window is dirty, or badly scratched you could get the symptoms you have.

new key required, if the other works fine then its not the Drive Authorisation System(DAS) or commonly know as ignition barrel. therfore 1 key is faulty and new one will need to be ordered from germany. To test the Infa red put your camera phone on "take photo mode" and point the tip of the key into the camera lens and work the key fob buttons, a white light should be seen on your phone screen, this proves that the infa red signal works.
