Fuel problem?

Fuel problem?
When I am a little below half tank left, my 99 W208 CLK320 will sputter and stall, as if there is no more gas left. Once I fill it up (with about a gallon in a reserve tank or at the gas station) it runs normal after. It will only take maximum ~8 gallons and not take more when refilling.
I have had the dual sending units changed as well as the fuel pump and filter.
Also when changing the fuel pump, there was just about 1/2 tank left and the mechanic had refilled it and it stalled thereafter.
Has this happen to anyone else? Any suggestions? I do not want to take it to the stealership yet, and my local independent MB mechanic is not sure what could be causing the problem.
