Tire/front end noise

Hi there, I hope you can help me Mr. Tech.

My car currently has on a fairly new set of Goodyear E1's with the stock '98 Sport rims. I know these tires are noisy, but I think I have more of an issue. Aside from the road howl one can expect at highway speeds, there is a noise/feeling that kicks in while speeding up and slowing down at the 20mph mark. Especially slowing down.

I'll try to explain the noise...I imagine I have worn or somehow 'bad' front wheel bearings. Going down past 20mph, there is a distinct "rubbing" noise I can hear coming from the front, combined with a feeling in the wheel. not so much as an obvious vibration, but definitely a 'feel'.
It isn't brakes rubbing or rotors.

I've had the car into the dealer 6 months ago and I mentioned the problem. They told me it was due to the tread pattern of the tires. I suppose it's possible, but I just can't live with it. If swapping out a new set of tires (different brand) was an option, I'd try it, but that's an expensive experiment.

Is this somewhat clear enough to form an opinion?

If you have an other brand of tires at the rear, just change front/rear wheels. If the noise changes to the rear too it are the tires.

I have a full set of fairly new F1's. I cannot swap out other tires, unless the dealer would be willing to tryo, but I doubt they would.

The dealer is right. The thread pattern on the F1's (I assume you mean F1 not E1) and the "thin" side wall make it "sound" like you're rolling on a flat tire, especially when one slows down at a stop sign or red light. I have the F1's on my '02 E430 and similar experience. I never complained because a few years ago I had same thing on a set of B'Stone RE71's on my Nissan 300ZX. I varied pressure over all over the place to resolve it, no success. It's just the tires.

Thanks Darkman.

I can live with it as long as I can look forward to peace & quiet when the Michelins arrive.

Frankly, I'm surprised MB would have picked these for OEM. Surely some engineer noticed this problem along the way.

Another thing that drives me crazy with these tires is that they have no lateral support whatsoever. You hit a bump and you notice sideways movement. They are absolutely horrible. And as the threads wear, so does the "howl" increase at speeds. You'll surely enjoy the Michellins.
